Remember when...

Todd shares examples of growing up in small-town America, when times were simpler. Remember when there were only three TV channels (no cable, no streaming)? Just one flavor of Cheerios (no Honey Nut, Apple Cinnamon or Chocolate Peanut Butter)? Actual humans answered the phone (no voice mail maze)? We’ll revisit old TV shows, favorite childhood candy and cringe-worthy ads like Clorox toothpaste and candy cigarettes that promised “Just like Dad!” (Do you still have your mood ring and Barbie doll?)

Seniors rave:

The Making of I Love Lucy

Journey back to the golden age of television to learn how this classic was created. Discover how it grew out of Lucy’s radio program, “My Favorite Husband.” Explore production techniques pioneered by Desi Arnaz, including the three-camera concept. And delve into the life stories of Lucy, Desi and cast members Vivian Vance and William Frawley (who were not the original choices for Ethel and Fred Mertz). Remember the candy factory? Stomping grapes? Vitameatavegamin? These episodes all have fascinating back stories.

Seniors learn new things about Lucy:

How I created Hello, Dolly!

Todd portrays composer/lyricist Jerry Herman in a peek behind the scenes of the Broadway blockbuster that won 10 Tony Awards in 1964 (a record unbroken for 37 years). Learn how Carol Channing was not the original choice for Dolly, and why the show almost closed out of town. Discover how Herman auditioned by writing four songs over a single weekend—three of which ended up in the show. And explore other stars who played Dolly during its seven-year run, including Ginger Rogers, Pearl Bailey and Phyllis Diller (yes, that Phyllis Diller)!
